Welcome to the Year 9 Drama Wikispace. Here you will find all sorts of information about what we have been doing in DRAMA! The boys have made an impressive start the year, showing off their creative, dramatic skills. We have a few 'Drama Kings' amongst us!

Most people have experienced the dry mouth, knocking knees, trembling hands, quivering voice and sweaty palms leading up to or during a public performance. In fact, for most people, public performance is one of their most fearful experiences.

Jerry Seinfeld got a big laugh when he joked about a survey that found that
the fear of public speaking ranks higher in most people's minds than the fear of death.
"In other words," he deadpanned, "at a funeral, the average person would rather be in the casket than giving the eulogy."

The boys have been developing improvisation and mime skills, using the format from the segment 'So you think you can mime' on the Chanel Ten show Good News Week.

The boys are given a few lines on a current news article and must mime it out to their group who are trying to 'guess' what the news article is about. This all occurs as the other students observe and prepare to provide structured feedback. To see an example of this from Good News Week click on the link below.

In developing an understanding of movement and space, the boys have been acting outside of their comfort zones. What a better way to do this with a group of Year 9 boys than to have them moving to music, also known as DANCE! The boys have built up a range of movements, PERCUSSIVE, SWINGING & SHAKING. They also experienced some basic Yoga movements, learning control and manipulation of the body. The boys moved around to the music 'Popcorn Song', 'Shake Your Tail Feather' and 'Boogie Wonderland'.

The final task involved the boys watching a clip from the orginal 'Flashdance' and then comparing this to an advert where a man performed his interpretation of this (see both clips below). The boys have been working on putting together their own style 'Flashdance' routines. It has been rather impressive ... not to mention entertaining!

The next step in the program is to experiment with costume design. The boys will need to design a specific outfit, stetch and plan and create entirely from newspaper. It will be great to see them working together to pull this off.

In the next term we will be working on script writing as preperation for our end of semester performance. This will based on the concept of Theatre Sports best represented on 'Thank God You're Here'. The boys will set up mini-skits and invite selected staff members to walk into their 'traps' to test them on their improv skills! There will be opportunity for the boys to experiment with set design, costuming, lighting and sound.

There is plenty to look forward to in the coming weeks!
